Spent 2 hours fixing a wall corner in Cleveland that 3 guys before me just slapped mortar over
The trick is cutting back the old mortar at least an inch and wetting the brick before you lay anything new, otherwise the patch pops off within a year, and I finally got to prove it when the homeowner called back 8 months later to say the corner still looks perfect, so what's your go to for tying new work into old without a visible seam?

Man, isn't that the worst, watching guys just butter mortar over old junk like it'll hold? I've torn out so many corners where the patch was basically floating on dust, and the homeowner paid three times for the same repair. Cutting it back and soaking the brick is the whole ballgame, the new stuff needs something to grab and the old brick sucks the water right out of the mix if you skip it. Eight months and still clean is a real win, that's how you know the bond actually took.
