Spent 3 weeks chasing a mortar color mismatch before figuring out it was the sand
Client wanted a repair to blend with a 40 year old wall in Fort Worth and I kept tweaking the mix, added more lime, switched cement brands, still looked pink next to the original. Turns out the yard had switched sand suppliers and the new stuff had way more iron in it, so once I got a few bags of the old river sand from a guy in Weatherford it matched in one try. Anyone else keep a stash of sand from old jobs for repair work like this?

Ha, been there. Sand is the one thing nobody thinks to check and it'll wreck a match every time. I keep a few coffee cans of old river sand and brick sand from past jobs in the truck, plus I write the yard and date on the lid so I know what I'm grabbing. Next time you're at the yard, ask what pit the sand came from, they switch on you without saying a word.
