Appreciation post: the dollar store cashier in Toledo who saved my dinner party
So last Saturday I'm standing in line at a Dollar Tree in Toledo with a cart full of canned beans and a 12 pack of eggs, trying to feed 6 people on $14 because payday wasn't till Monday. The cashier, this older lady named Dot, looks at my sad pile and goes "honey, you're making chili with that?" I said yeah, kinda, and she walks me two aisles over and points at the marked down bread rack. Day old loaves for 50 cents each. She said crumble half a loaf into the pot and it thickens everything up and nobody knows the difference. I tried it, it worked, and the whole pot cost me $9.63 total. My friends actually asked for the recipe and I felt like a fraud saying the secret ingredient was basically free bread crumbs. Now I check the day old rack at every store I walk into, not just for bread but for muffins and rolls too. Dot retired like 3 weeks later so I never got to tell her it became a regular thing. What's the best tip a total stranger has handed you in a checkout line?
