Got laughed at in the Aldi checkout line when I tried to explain my $3 dinner plan to a stranger
So I was standing in line at the Aldi on Cactus Road around 6pm on a Tuesday with a cart full of markdown chicken thighs and a bag of rice, and this older guy behind me asked what I was making for dinner. I told him I could feed my family of four for under $3 a plate using the clearance meat plus a can of diced tomatoes and some frozen peppers I got for 89 cents. He just laughed and said his wife would never eat that, then he paid $14 for one of those pre made lasagnas. Here is the funny part though, he found me in the parking lot and asked me to write the recipe down on the back of his receipt. I ended up texting him a photo of my actual grocery list that night and he sent back a thumbs up. Now I want to know, has anyone else been approached by a nosy shopper while doing the cheap meal thing? What do you say when they ask how you do it?
My big trick is standing there with my clearance chicken looking like a guy who just won the lottery on a scratch ticket he found in the parking lot. Some lady cornered me last month asking how I got four meals out of two bucks worth of veggies, and I just told her the truth, which is that I have no shame and a deep freezer. Writing it on a receipt is how you know the recipe is legit, so good on you for converting the lasagna guy.
