Realized I was overfilling my rice cooker the whole time after a neighbor in my building showed me the water trick
She measured with her knuckle instead of using the lines inside, and now my rice actually comes out fluffy instead of mushy, so has anyone else been doing it wrong this whole time too?

Knuckle trick ruined my rice until I switched to a wider pot.

Hold up, are we sure the knuckle trick is actually better or just different? Those lines on the cooker are there for a reason, so they probably account for the specific pot size and how much steam escapes. I've had dry rice more often than I like when I wing it with the finger method, your mileage may vary.

Grant, fair point but here's what I'm wondering - when you use the knuckle trick, are you using the same pot every time? Because I've noticed it works way better in a wide shallow pot than a tall narrow one. The water line hits different knuckle spots depending on how much the rice spreads out. Maybe the people who hate on it are using a pot shape that throws off the measurement.
