TIL a 10 lb bag of chicken leg quarters at Costco runs about $7.50, thats 75 cents a pound
I was doing my usual run at the Costco on Plank Road here in Baton Rouge and actually stopped to read the price tag on the big bag of leg quarters instead of just grabbing it. Did the math in my head in the parking lot, 75 cents a pound for dark meat, and I just stood there for a second. I grabbed two bags and smoked half of them over the weekend and froze the rest for soup later this month. Has anyone else found a cut of meat that cheap lately, or is this just a southern thing?
Used to walk right past those big bags at Costco. Figured dark meat was just for people who could not afford the good stuff, and I was all about the boneless skinless breasts. Then my sister made a pot of chicken and dumplings with leg quarters and I could not believe how much better it tasted, juicy and cheap. Now I buy two bags myself and smoke them on the pit out back, then pick the meat for soup and tacos all month. That 75 cents a pound beats anything at the grocery store, even the marked down bin. Guess being wrong about cheap food is the best kind of wrong.
