A hostel manager in Lisbon told me my 40L backpack was why I kept paying for checked bags
I was two weeks into a 3 month trip and had already blown $180 on budget airline bag fees because my backpack was too big for the free carry on sizer. The manager at my hostel in Lisbon watched me repack for the fourth time and just said 'you're carrying a closet, not a backpack.' I swapped to a 28L bag for $45 at a thrift shop and mailed the rest home for $30. Now I pack for a week with 5 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, and one pair of shoes, and I haven't paid a bag fee in 14 flights. Anyone else made a packing change that actually saved real money?
Man, my buddy did the same thing after getting hit with bag fees in Thailand, ditched his big pack for a cheap schoolbag and never looked back. Wild how much cash you bleed just from carrying too much stuff.
