Hostel kitchens changed my mind about eating out for every meal

Last month in Lisbon I stayed at a hostel with a shared kitchen for $22 a night. First two days I kept buying pastries and sandwiches, blew about $40 on food. Then a guy from Brazil cooked a big pot of beans and rice and split it with me for $3 total. Now I look for hostels with at least a stovetop and buy groceries from the local market, saves me $15 to $20 a day easy. Anyone else found that cooking one big meal in a hostel saves enough to fund a museum pass or two?

The math on that rice and beans is hard to beat, but a museum pass usually beats a day of bread and coffee too. You're saving money, sure, but you're also missing out on the local food scene, which is half the reason people travel in the first place. I'd say cook a few nights, eat out a couple others, and you'll get the best of both without turning your trip into a grocery run.
