My cousin swore by hostel kitchens to save cash on food
She said just cook one big meal and eat leftovers for days, but last trip in Barcelona the hostel kitchen was so packed I ended up spending more on takeout than a cheap restaurant would've cost. Has anyone actually had luck with that trick or is it just a myth?

Nah, I gotta disagree. It really depends on the timing. If you hit the kitchen at peak dinner time you're screwed, but cook at 2pm or 9pm and you're fine. I've saved a ton doing this in Europe.

Honestly the 9pm thing works great since most travelers eat way earlier than locals do.

Wait wait wait - you're telling me regular travelers actually eat at 9pm on purpose? I thought that was just the time you showed up hoping the place was still open after a long day of walking. Most tourists I've seen are done eating by 7pm and back in their hotel room by 8pm, ready to pass out from jet lag. The idea that someone would willingly choose to eat that late when they're on vacation sounds like torture to me. I get hangry if I don't eat by 6pm no matter what country I'm in. You must have some serious willpower to push through that 8pm slump just to eat with the locals.
