Overheard a guy at baggage claim say his flight got cheaper after booking

He said he rebooked the exact same route 3 times in one week and saved $87 total. I tried it on a Denver to Chicago trip last month, checked the fare twice a day, and caught a $45 drop two days before departure. Anyone else mess with rebooking same-day flights or is that just a unicorn thing?
