The 12 euro bus ticket that made me ditch my travel card

I spent 3 years in Berlin convinced the monthly transit pass was the only way, then last month I missed my stop and grabbed a random FlixBus to Dresden for 12 euros and realized I'd been paying for bus and train subscriptions I never used. My 'savings' app literally told me I'd wasted 240 euros over the last year on passes for routes I walked instead. Has anyone else done the math on their local transit vs. just buying day tickets as you go?
