The $45 bus pass that clued me into hostel kitchens for good

Used to think hostels were just for sleeping, but last spring in Lisbon I grabbed a weekly transit card for 45 bucks and ended up eating dinner in the shared kitchen every night. Some backpacker showed me how to cook a big pot of rice and beans for like 2 euros, and that beat any restaurant meal I'd paid for that trip. Now I always look for hostels with a stove and a fridge before booking, even if the bed costs a few extra dollars. That one pass basically paid for itself in food savings alone, plus I never stressed about catching the wrong tram. Has anyone else found that hostel kitchens changed their whole food budget?
