Tour guide in Lisbon made me rethink my whole packing system

I was on a 3 day trip to Lisbon last spring and this local tour guide named Marco noticed my rolling suitcase and just laughed. He said real budget travelers carry a 30 liter backpack and wash clothes in the sink, and he showed me his setup with two shirts and a bar of soap. It hit different because I had spent $40 on baggage fees just for clothes I wore once. Has anyone else switched to carry-on only after a stranger called them out?
