Took me three weekends to figure out why my grocery budget kept creeping up 40 bucks a month
I finally tracked it down to the self checkout at the Hy-Vee on Rockingham. Here is the dumb part. I thought it was snacks or my kid's cereal. Nope. It was the little prompt that asks if you want to round up to the nearest dollar for the food bank. I always hit yes without thinking. Sounds tiny right? Well it adds up to almost 40 dollars a month for me, which is basically a whole tank of gas in my Civic. So I switched to cash only for groceries and started writing every single thing down on a notepad in my kitchen, and that round up prompt still got me the first two weeks because I forgot to say no out loud. Third weekend I finally broke the habit by paying at the real lane with a person. Anyway, my point is I spent almost a month chasing this thing and the answer was sitting right on the screen the whole time. Has anyone else had a tiny auto yes habit quietly eat their budget like that?
40 bucks a month just from the round up button is wild, that's basically a car payment if you stretch it out over a year. I hit yes on those prompts on autopilot too and never once stopped to add up what it actually costs me. Good call switching to the real lane where a person has to look you in the eye.
