Why I stopped following the 50/30/20 rule after 6 months of trying
Everyone in here seems to love the 50/30/20 split. Needs, wants, savings. I tried it for 6 months back in 2023 and it wrecked my budget. Rent in Austin ate 48% of my take home before I even bought food. So 20% savings meant I was eating rice and beans to hit that number. I get the idea but it's built for people who don't live in expensive cities or have student loans. I switched to a fixed amount for savings first, then let the rest fall where it needs. I'm actually saving more now, like 22% of my income, and I don't feel guilty when I grab coffee. Has anyone else found the percentages just don't fit their real numbers?

Right, percentages pretend everyone's life is the same shape, but savings first just works when rent already ate the map!
