Debate: Is a minimalist bujo better than a decorative one?

I was at a craft store in Denver last weekend and overheard two people arguing about bullet journal styles. One said her minimalist layout saves time and keeps her focused. The other said her artistic spreads make her want to open her journal every day. Which side do you lean toward and why?

I've tried both and my minimalist spreads got abandoned after two weeks. The decorative one with cheap washi tape and messy doodles actually stuck for six months. Your mileage may vary, but showing up every day matters way more than what it looks like.

Yeah "showing up every day matters way more than what it looks like" is the real deal. I had the same thing happen with my first few attempts at journaling. I kept trying to make it perfect with all these fancy layouts and pretty handwriting and I just quit after a week because it felt like homework. Then I started just scribbling stuff in a cheap spiral notebook with whatever pen was nearby and suddenly I was doing it every day for months. The key is to lower the bar so low that you don't even have to think about it. If you miss a day or two just pick back up, don't start a whole new notebook or system. That's what always tripped me up.

Six months seems like an exception, not the rule though.
