I switched from a Leuchtturm1917 to a cheap spiral notebook and my journaling got better

For years I stuck with the fancy dotted notebooks everyone recommends, but last fall I grabbed a $2 spiral from a store in Portland. The paper is thin and the lines are blue, but I stopped worrying about making it perfect. Now I actually write in it every day. Has anyone else ditched the 'right' tools and found it helped?

Good tools can actually make you want to write more, though.

Totally, @erickelly. A good pen is half the battle.

People get way too hung up on gear. It's just a pen, not some magic wand for creativity. If your ideas are solid, they'll come out fine with a cheap ballpoint. Obsessing over the perfect tool feels like avoiding the actual work of writing.

Nah, a bad pen never stopped a good idea. The real work happens in your head anyway.
