Threw $800 at a lawyer for a non compete review that went nowhere

Hired a fancy firm in Chicago to look over a non compete clause. Guy charged me $350 an hour. Took two meetings and a written opinion. Ended up just saying "probably not enforceable anyway." Could have found that on Google in ten minutes. Anyone else get burned paying for legal advice that was basically common sense?

Isn't it crazy how much stuff we pay experts to tell us what we already know?

Paid a life coach $200 once to tell me to "write down what makes me happy." Groundbreaking stuff, really.

I used to roll my eyes at that kind of advice too. But then I actually did it for a few weeks and realized I never really stopped to think about what I actually liked, just what I was supposed to like. It's not about the writing part, it's about giving yourself permission to pay attention. Still wouldn't pay $200 for it though, that's the real scam. The trick is just doing the simple thing without someone charging you for the secret.
