Appreciation post: the $12 tailgate latch that saved my camping trip near Bend
My tailgate latch snapped 40 miles outside Bend last month with all my gear in the bed, and a guy at a hardware store sold me a $12 universal latch that bolted right on. I almost bought a $180 OEM replacement online right there in the parking lot. Has anyone else had a cheap fix outlast the fancy part it replaced?

Man that panic of having your bed full of gear and no way to keep it shut is so real, glad someone hooked you up for twelve bucks instead of getting gouged online. I had a similar thing with a throttle cable on an old truck where the junkyard part outlived the truck itself. Those cheap fix moments feel like winning the lottery, honestly. It kills me how fast we jump to buying the fancy replacement when a guy behind a counter with real know-how can solve it in five minutes. Bend is lucky to have a shop like that, a lot of places would've just shrugged and pointed you to the dealer. Hope that latch keeps holding for many trips to come.
