Guy asked me to match his 1980s kitchen cabinets, then handed me a napkin drawing
Last month a homeowner in Phoenix calls me up, says he wants new doors for his old oak cabinets. I show up and he hands me this greasy napkin with a squiggly rectangle and a smiley face on it, claiming that's the exact profile he needs. I spent 20 minutes trying to explain grain direction and hinge boring, but he just kept saying 'you know, like the ones in my grandma's house.' I finally pulled out my sample book and he pointed to a cherry shaker door and said 'that's it, but brown.' Has anyone else had a client describe something with zero technical terms and still expect perfection? I charged him $450 for the consultation and he paid without blinking, so maybe I should start doing that more often.

Wait, he paid $450 for a napkin drawing of a smiley face?
