Picked up a used domino joiner at a garage sale in Austin last weekend

The guy selling it showed me how to cut mortises without a fence just by eyeballing pencil marks and now I’m flying through face frames twice as fast, anyone else try freehanding with one of these?

Well, are you getting consistent joint depths without a fence?

oh come on, it's fine. people built stuff for centuries with nothing but a marking gauge and a sharp chisel. you don't need a fence to get consistent depths if you take your time and register off the same edge every cut. plus a fence adds drag and can mess up your rhythm on longer runs. i've done whole tabletops this way and everything came out level within a 32nd. it's not like we're building a space shuttle here.
