Old timer in Toledo convinced me to stop using gel caps on drops
I used to put gel caps on every single drop, thought it was the professional way to go. Then this guy with 30 years in the trade took me on a ride along and showed me his method. He just uses electrical tape and a dab of silicone on the connector, been doing it that way for decades. I argued with him for a bit but he pointed out gel caps trap moisture in humid basements and cause corrosion later. Switched to his method about 6 months ago and haven't had a single callback for signal loss. Anyone else ditch gel caps for something simpler?

My buddy Mike out in Cleveland tried switching from gel caps to silicone tape two years ago. He had a job in a crawl space where the customer complained about signal dropping every time it rained hard. Mike went back and found corrosion inside three of his gel cap connections. He pulled them off and re-did them with electrical tape and a bit of clear silicone. The system has been running solid ever since through two wet springs and a humid summer.

That seems like a pretty extreme reaction to some corrosion in a few gel caps. I've used gel caps in plenty of damp areas and never had issues that dramatic. Maybe Mike just had a bad batch or didn't seal them properly in the first place.
