Vent: I thought flat top screws on lens mounts were the devil, then a guy in Toledo told me about JIS
Spent 3 hours on a Canon FD mount last weekend and chewed up two flat heads for no reason. Old timer at the Toledo repair meetup grabbed my driver and asked if it was JIS, and I had no clue what he meant. Turns out Japanese cameras use JIS screws that look like Phillips but aren't, and a regular Phillips driver just strips them. Ordered a $22 Vessel set that night and every mount since has come out clean. Anyone else convert over, or do you still grind down your Phillips tips to make them fit?
Man, the JIS thing is like finding out Santa isn't real but in screwdriver form. I spent years thinking I was just bad at flatheads and that every Japanese camera was put together by someone who hated me personally. The "looks like Phillips but isn't" part is what gets everybody, because it fits just enough to turn a little bit before it slips and eats the head. The real kicker is those impact drivers people buy thinking they'll help, and they just make the stripping happen faster. Honestly the worst part is all the old forum posts from 2005 telling people to grind their Phillips tips down, which kind of works but never quite right. Twenty two bucks to stop wrecking mounts seems like the easiest call ever.
