My $60 foam pad beat a $300 air mattress in Colorado

Drove out to Rocky Mountain National Park last month and my inflatable mattress sprung a leak at 2am, so I slept on the spare closed-cell foam pad I brought for sitting. Woke up warmer and less achy than any night on that fancy mattress, and now I'm curious if anyone else ditched air for foam on cold ground.

Was it the ground temp or just the foam holding up that made the difference?

Ground temp matters more than you'd think, @emma_garcia, because cold foam gets brittle and won't grip no matter how fresh it is. I've had boards slide right off on a freezing morning, so I always warm the bed or wait until the air warms up a bit.
