Slept on a $6 foam mat for 3 nights and I owe the ground pad aisle an apology
For 2 seasons I hauled around a bulky self inflating pad at 3.5 lbs that took me 15 puffs to fill and still left my hip aching by 4am at Panther Creek. Last trip my buddy tossed me his cheap closed cell foam mat as a joke and I slept better on that thing than I had in months, mostly because it never leaked and I could just flop it down in the dark. Now I am shopping for a slightly thicker foam mat and wondering if anyone here has a width they swear by for side sleeping.

Closed cell foam doesn't actually insulate that great, r-value is low.
