Hot take: My boss told me to stop chasing promotions

He said, 'Focus on getting really good at one thing here, the rest is noise.' I've been trying to move up for two years, but after that talk, I'm putting all my effort into mastering our CRM system. Does anyone else feel pressure to climb the ladder when you should just get better at your job?
