Shoutout to the older guy at my local coffee shop who gave me some blunt career advice last week

He said "stop chasing titles and start chasing skills you can actually sell" and it hit harder than I expected since I've been stuck at the same job for 3 years now, anyone else get a reality check from a complete stranger like that?

@violag80 yeah that whole "stop chasing titles" thing really hits different when you've been grinding at one place for years. I had a friend who was obsessed with becoming a "manager" at her retail job for like two years straight. She kept waiting for that promotion, turning down side projects and extra training because it wasn't part of the manager track she had in her head. Then one day this older customer just straight up told her "nobody cares about that title, they care about what you can actually do" and it broke her out of that fog. She started learning inventory systems and customer service tricks on her own time, and within six months she had recruiters from three different companies reaching out to her without even applying. Titles are just words on paper, but skills are what actually get you through the door somewhere new.

Actually the user tag in that story is the_viola not violag80, I noticed. But yeah that older customer dropping truth like that is wild. Kinda makes you wonder how many people are stuck in that same trap just waiting for a title that doesn't even matter.

Honestly that's some solid advice I wish I heard years ago.

@morganmartinez I used to roll my eyes at advice like this, honestly. Thought it was just another cliche people threw around without really thinking. But then I actually tried it one time when I was stuck on something at work, and it totally clicked. Funny how the stuff you dismiss for years can end up being exactly what you needed to hear. Glad someone else is getting that same lightbulb moment now.
