Client asked me to 'just trim a bit' and now the whole door frame is gone

Was doing a simple casing swap in a Denver house last month, and the homeowner kept hovering saying we could take off a little more for the new tile they hadn't picked yet. I cut 3/8 off the jamb edges, and suddenly the hinges were floating on 1/4 inch of wood, looks terrible from the hallway. Anyone else deal with homeowners who don't understand how trim thickness works before they ask for extra cuts?
