I finally gave in and tried a track saw for cabinet boxes, and now my old Skilsaw is collecting dust
Last month a guy I sub for on kitchen remodels in Dayton kept pushing me to try his track saw on a batch of 12 upper cabinet boxes, and I finally caved after he offered to lend it for a weekend. I figured it would be slow and fussy, but I cut all the gables and shelves for six boxes in about an hour and a half, and every edge was dead square without touching my hand plane. My old worm drive would have left me fighting tearout on the birch ply and reaching for the sander every few pieces. What really got me was that I didn't have to clear the whole shop floor to break down a 4x8 sheet, which used to eat up half a morning by itself. I'm not saying the Skilsaw is going anywhere for framing or rough cuts, but for finished work it's a whole different ballgame. Has anyone else made the switch and found a rail setup that doesn't slip on MDF, or am I the last guy in this town doing it the hard way?
