That before-and-after of my first staircase redo versus last week's job looks like two different people built them

First one I did in 2019 took me three days and had gaps you could fit a nickel through, but last week I knocked out a full set of oak treads in six hours with zero gaps, mostly because I finally stopped rushing and actually measured each tread twice before cutting - anyone else see a huge jump in quality after a few years in the trade?

Did you ever find yourself talking to the wood after the third measurement?

Measuring twice is the only real shortcut worth taking.

Whoa wait, @patricia32 are you actually talking to the wood? Like out loud? I mean I've definitely muttered a few choice words at a stubborn piece of oak that wouldn't split right, but full conversations? That's a whole other level of relationship with lumber. I gotta say, I've measured three times before and still ended up with two different numbers.
