Finally got my seams to disappear on a tricky patterned carpet job

Spent 3 hours last week redoing a seam in a high-traffic hallway because I kept seeing a shadow line about 2 inches in from the wall, and it turned out I was trimming the backing too short before the heat iron hit it - has anyone else run into this on tight patterns?

Agreed with @nelson.wren on that roller trick, but I used to think it was all about the blade pressure until I saw it happen on my own job last month. Changed my mind completely after one of those "oh, that's actually the backing" moments.

Was the shadow line showing up before or after you hit it with the roller? Trimming the backing too short can definitely cause that hollow look.
