That fancy $200 power stretcher I bought three months ago sits in my truck while I still reach for my old manual one

Used it on a 12x15 bedroom in Phoenix last week and the damn thing kept slipping on the pad, so I switched back to my beat-up Roberts and got the job done in half the time, has anyone else had a power stretcher just not cooperate on certain carpet backings?

...and honestly I gotta wonder if maybe the problem isn't the tool so much as people overcomplicating the whole thing. I mean we been stretching carpet since before power stretchers existed, my dad used a knee kicker and a prayer and his carpets laid fine for twenty years. Sure the power ones are fancy but when they slip or jam up you're standing there cussing at it while the manual one just works. People act like you need the latest gear to do a decent job but half the time it's just marketing making you feel inadequate. Sounds like you already know what works for you so why force it.

Right?! @williamhenderson hit the nail on the head, it's like we forgot that sometimes the old ways just work better without all the fuss. You'll be chasing your tail trying to fix something that wasn't even broken in the first place.

Swap out the broom head on that thing before you throw the whole tool away. I had the same issue with mine last year - kept slipping on the backing every time I hit a seam. Turns out the pad was just worn smooth and a fresh one grabbed like new. Also check your stroke angle, you might be leaning too far back and losing tension. Sometimes it ain't the tool, it's just you fighting it instead of letting it do the work.
