Used to watch apology videos all the way through, then I started counting the cuts in the first 60 seconds
Back in 2021 I would sit through a 10 minute apology and just feel it out. Now I grab a pen and mark every jump cut, and if the star hits 15 cuts before they say sorry out loud, I already know what I am watching. The one that broke me was a YouTuber who did 9 cuts in the first 40 seconds and never once looked at the lens. Does anyone else time the pauses between the cut and the apology, or am I the only one doing math on these videos?
The 15 cut thing is close but not how it works. People who edit for a living will tell you the cuts are not the tell, it is whether the cuts land on the breath. A nervous editor cuts mid breath, a calm one cuts between sentences. So you can hit 20 cuts in a minute and still look steady if each one falls at the end of a thought. The 9 cuts in 40 seconds guy is a different problem, that is just no eye contact plus jumpy framing, which reads as guilt even when the cuts themselves are fine. If you want real math, time the gap between the cut and when the mouth starts moving again. Long gaps mean script, short gaps mean they memorized it and are racing to get it over with.
