The landlord who fixed a radiator with a coat hanger, back in 2011
I was doing a walkthrough for a tenant in a Logan Square two-flat, and the landlord showed up unannounced. He had a coat hanger wrapped around a valve on an old steam radiator, said it was his grandpa's trick for bleeding air. He told me, 'Permits are for people who don't know the building's moods,' and then handed me a cash rent check for the wrong amount. I had to explain that a sticky valve could blow steam into the wall, but he just laughed and said it'd been like that since 1987. That conversation stuck with me because he'd owned the place for 30 years without a single inspection. Has anyone else dealt with a landlord who refuses to follow code but never gets caught?

Honestly, my first apartment in Pilsen had a landlord who "fixed" a ceiling leak with a bucket and a prayer for 11 months. He swore the roof was fine because he'd never seen a stain grow, but I could literally watch the water drip into my cereal bowl. Ngl, dude owned three buildings and somehow never got a single violation on record.
