Why does nobody talk about how Cook County traffic court mails you a court date you never agreed to?
I got a ticket on Lake Shore Drive back in February, paid the $75 online the next morning, and figured that was that. Then three weeks ago a letter shows up saying I missed a court date in May and now I owe $225 plus a failure to appear fee. Nobody at the clerk's office could explain why a paid ticket turned into a court summons, and they told me I still had to show up in person at 50 W Washington to sort it out. Has anybody actually gotten one of these cleared without burning a whole day downtown?
50 W Washington is the worst, I had to go there once for a parking thing and sat for like four hours just to talk to someone for two minutes. What you're describing is the same thing that happened to my cousin with her water bill, she paid it, the payment sat in some system, and then she got a shutoff notice for a bill she already paid. It feels like every office in this city runs on its own computer that never talks to the other ones, so the left hand has no clue what the right hand did. The ticket system and the court system are probably two totally separate things and nobody bothered to connect them. I don't have a magic fix for you but bring your payment receipt and the date you paid it, and maybe try calling your alderman's office first, sometimes they can push it through faster than waiting in line.
