Can we talk about how CSIA says 25,000 chimney fires happen a year in the US?
I read that stat on the CSIA site while looking up something else and it stopped me cold. How many of the calls in your area actually turn out to be creosote buildup versus something else?
Stopped me too when I first saw that number. Then I did the math and it got worse. If there are 25,000 chimney fires a year and most homes have one chimney, that means tens of thousands of families had a scare or worse. Most of those fires are just creosote that sat too long because nobody got the flue swept. In my area, when we get a call about smoke or a smell, it's creosote buildup way more often than a broken flue or a bird nest or anything else. People think a chimney fire is this big dramatic thing with flames shooting out the top. Half the time it's a low rumble that puts itself out and the homeowner never even knows it happened. Then they find out later the liner is cracked and it's a whole different problem. What gets me is how many of those 25,000 could have been avoided with one cleaning a year.
