My rotary brush finally seized up on a heavy soot job last Tuesday
I was halfway through a creosote-glazed flue when the motor started smoking and then just died, so I had to finish by hand with a wire whip, has anyone else had a brush lock up mid-sweep?

Bet you killed the bearings - I used to skip lubrication but learned that lesson the hard way.

Bet you killed the bearings running it dry between cleans.

Honestly I see it a bit different. I've run my Dewalt grinder for YEARS without even thinking about lubricating the bearings between uses and it's still going strong. Those sealed bearings are pretty tough, they can handle some dry time between jobs unless you're literally running it for hours straight every single day in a dusty construction site. I think cleaning it off and letting it air dry is totally fine for most hobbyists and weekend warriors.
