My journal got soaked on a camping trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Jumped in to say this reminds me of how we treat a lot of broken stuff without giving it a shot first. @the_claire really nailed it with the whole "look closer before tossing" mindset, it applies to everything from dryers to soaked journals. I've fixed a cracked phone screen with a screen protector kit and some careful patience once, and it worked for like six more months. People rush to throw things out when a little effort can bring them back, and that's true for journals and relationships and old lamps honestly. Your spatula trick sounds genius, I'm gonna remember that for next time my stuff gets wrecked outside.

Guy swore solder paste was good enough for through-hole jobs

Hmm, idk, I gotta push back a little on that, @nathankim. Paste can actually work fine for through-hole if you're careful with your technique. I've done plenty of joints where I just tack a lead with a bit of paste and hit it with the iron, gets a solid flow without needing separate flux. Maybe it's just me but I've had more luck with paste on tight pads where rosin core feels like it dries out before the joint wets fully. You just gotta watch your heat and not let it cook.

Unpopular opinion: I actually prefer using a manual torque wrench over the digital ones

Ditch a digital torque wrench halfway through a job because the battery died and you didn't pack a spare. Then tell me you don't miss that old beam-style click.

Ditched my old cable stapler for a hammer tacker after a job in Phoenix

My buddy Ray actually told me a story similar to what you said about "just bouncing off." He was doing a shed roof with this fancy electric stapler and it kept skipping on the cedar shakes. After smacking it against his palm a few times in frustration he grabbed a hammer tacker from an old toolbox he found in the truck and it went through like butter. He said he couldn't believe he wasted half the morning messing with the electric one. Makes you wonder how many more of us have that same experience hidden in our tool sheds.

My Catan group banned me after I organized pieces by color before setup

@tessaperry I read a board game blog article that said organization skills can be a competitive edge.
