Found a free way to lower my apartment's energy bill by 15% in one month

I live in a drafty old building in Chicago and my heating bill was getting crazy. A friend told me about thermal curtains, but even cheap ones are like $40 each. Instead I bought a roll of clear window insulation film for $12 and sealed up three windows last month. It took about an hour per window with a hair dryer to get it tight. My January bill went from $185 to $157 just from that one change. Has anyone else tried this stuff or found other cheap fixes for old windows?

Slapped that film on my windows last winter too and felt like a genius until my cat decided it was a new scratching post. Ended up with a whole corner peeled back and the room suddenly felt like a freezer again. Definitely works though, I just have to keep the cat away now which is basically a full time job. Might try tacking some cheap weatherstripping around the door frame next month if I can find the motivation.

Oh man @smith.elliot, I feel your pain! My cat did the exact same thing to mine.

Ha! I gotta admit, I was totally skeptical about this stuff at first. Thought it was just another gimmick that wouldn't hold up to a real freeze. But after seeing how many people swear by it and hearing stories like yours, I finally picked up a roll last week for my drafty back door. Now I'm half excited to try it out and half terrified my own cat's gonna go full ninja on it. Did you find any way to keep the cat distracted or did you just have to accept the battle?
