Just realized my old lawn care routine was a total waste

My neighbor in Tucson told me last year that watering my grass in the afternoon was just evaporating city water into the dry air. I switched to a drip system on a timer for 20 minutes at dawn and let the native gravel garden take over most of the yard. How many other simple habits are we all just doing wrong without a second thought?

Man, you are SO right. I used to blast my AC all day to keep the house cool, but just closing the blinds on the sunny side made a HUGE difference. My old habit was just burning money for no reason.

Yeah, and it's not just lawns. I used to run the dishwasher every night because I thought it was more efficient full. Turns out that old thing uses way less water on a light wash for a half load, and my electric bill dipped when I stopped the daily heat-dry cycle. We get these routines stuck in our heads and never question if the basics even make sense anymore.

Exactly, and it gets worse with those "smart" appliances. My new dishwasher has an eco mode that takes three hours, and the manual swears it saves power. But if you run it during peak energy rates, that long cycle might actually cost MORE than a quick wash at a cheaper time of day. So the "efficient" setting can be a trap if you don't think about the whole system.

Tbh @the_holly, switching to air-drying dishes cut my bill too, just questioning old habits.
