Just started composting kitchen scraps and it's easier than I thought

I set up a small bin in my backyard for food waste. It turns into soil for my garden instead of going to the landfill. This cuts down on methane emissions from trash. I'm surprised how little effort it takes.

Honestly, that's cool you started composting! Just so you know, if the pile doesn't get enough air, it can still make methane. Turning it every week or adding dry leaves helps keep it working right. Tbh, it's much better than sending stuff to the landfill, but air flow is key to really cut down on emissions.

Wait, so my compost pile could just be quietly farting out methane if I ignore it? Great, now I have to worry about my dirt being rude. Guess I'll go poke it with a stick to keep it from getting gassy.

Yeah, that's the best part (how much it helps). Just to tack on, the big win with home composting is it avoids making methane at the landfill entirely. Like, that banana peel buried in trash makes methane, but in your bin it breaks down with air. So you're stopping the gas before it even starts, which is pretty neat. A simple wire bin or even just a pile lets in plenty of air on its own.

Feel your pain with the compost pile. Mine turned into a slimy mess once because I didn't let air in. Threw in some straw and gave it a good mix, and it bounced back. Now I'm careful to keep it fluffy. Helps the planet and my garden. Solid advice from both of you.
