TIL a trick for taming cowlicks on a client from Chicago

I used a tiny bit of pomade on damp hair before blow drying, and it actually held the direction all day. Anyone have a different method for stubborn ones?

I started using a cheap laser level to check my cutterhead pitch on the fly

We were fighting a stubborn sandbar on the Ohio River, and the old sight-line method just wasn't cutting it. I grabbed a $40 level from my truck, rigged it to the ladder, and got the angle dialed in within 5 minutes, which saved us hours of guesswork. Anyone have a better method for quick pitch checks?

An old-timer's sock method for finding subfloor dips

I was grabbing adhesive at the store last week when this retired guy struck up a chat about the vinyl in my cart. He said he laid floors for decades and told me about just walking around in socks to feel for low spots before measuring. It seemed kind of odd, but I gave it a shot on my next install, and it really helped catch a problem area. Now I always do that quick sock walk first, even if the plans look fine on paper.
