I finally saw the weirdest subfloor repair in a 1920s bungalow in Cincinnati

The homeowner had patched a hole with a piece of an old license plate and about two pounds of roofing tar. It held for maybe six months before the new vinyl plank I was laying over it started to buckle. I had to cut out a 3-foot section and replace it with proper plywood. Has anyone else found something that wild under an old floor?

PSA: Had a full glue-up on a 500 sq ft vinyl plank job in Phoenix start to skin over because the AC died mid-day.

We ended up mixing in small batches in a cooler with ice packs and working in 4x4 sections, but has anyone found a better fix for that kind of heat disaster?

Shoutout to the guy at the supply house who talked me into trying a 4 inch roller for glue down

I was picking up adhesive for a vinyl plank job in Springfield and overheard him telling another installer to skip the trowel and use a short nap roller instead. I tried it on a small bathroom floor last week and the bond was way more even with less squeeze out. Anyone else switch from a trowel to a roller for certain glue applications?

I did a 400 square foot job in Springfield last month with a 6 inch wide engineered oak, and the first few rows were a real fight. After watching a quick video on using a laser level for the starter line, the whole thing just clicked and went smooth. A job in a 1920s bungalow in Pasadena made me swear off cheap underlayment for good.

I was putting down engineered hardwood and the homeowner bought the thinnest, cheapest foam pad he could find. Halfway through the main room, you could feel every single seam in the subfloor through the floorboards, and it sounded hollow when you walked. I had to pull up 400 square feet and start over with a proper cork underlayment. Has anyone else had a client try to cut corners on the stuff you don't see and ruin the whole feel of the floor?

My helper put down a whole box of plank flooring backwards on a job in Boise.

We were installing a click-lock vinyl in a new build, and he didn't notice the directional arrows. Had to pull up 20 square feet before the adhesive set. Anyone have a good trick for making sure new guys catch that detail first thing?

Saw a new vinyl plank pattern at a hotel in Nashville that threw me off

I was staying at a place downtown last weekend and the lobby floor looked like wide plank hardwood from a distance. Got up close and it was actually a 9 inch wide LVP with a texture I've never felt before, almost like real brushed oak. The install was perfect, no visible seams even in the high traffic area by the doors. Has anyone else run into this super wide format stuff on a commercial job?

I was on Maple Street the other day and saw dumpsters full of old carpet at three different homes. It reminded me of when I first got into flooring, back in the late 90s. Every new house in this area had plush carpet installed, and we were busy with roll after roll. I helped my uncle lay carpet in his living room, kneeling for hours to get the seams just right. Now, folks are all about hard surfaces like laminate or engineered wood. The tools have gotten easier to use, like adhesive spreaders that don't clog as much. But I miss the quiet that a good carpet pad gave a room. It's wild how neighborhood trends can flip like that.

Serious question, fixing uneven subfloor under luxury vinyl planks.

Had a job where the LVP was clicking because the subfloor had dips. One buddy swears by self-leveler for any flaw, another says to just feather patch the low spots. I mixed a small batch of leveler for the big dip and patched the rest, which saved time and money. Which method do you guys trust more for this kind of fix?

Most installers skip extended flatness checks, but those hidden dips cause major issues down the road, lol.

I've been at this for years, but this job has me puzzled. I used strong glue on a concrete floor that was dry. Now the center tiles are loose, but the edges hold. I wonder if the slab has a bump I didn't catch.
