An old-timer's sock method for finding subfloor dips

I was grabbing adhesive at the store last week when this retired guy struck up a chat about the vinyl in my cart. He said he laid floors for decades and told me about just walking around in socks to feel for low spots before measuring. It seemed kind of odd, but I gave it a shot on my next install, and it really helped catch a problem area. Now I always do that quick sock walk first, even if the plans look fine on paper.

Serious question, fixing uneven subfloor under luxury vinyl planks.

Had a job where the LVP was clicking because the subfloor had dips. One buddy swears by self-leveler for any flaw, another says to just feather patch the low spots. I mixed a small batch of leveler for the big dip and patched the rest, which saved time and money. Which method do you guys trust more for this kind of fix?

Update: That longer level I bought last month just saved a job from disaster

Most installers skip extended flatness checks, but those hidden dips cause major issues down the road, lol.

Heads up on glue-down vinyl tile issues in room centers

I've been at this for years, but this job has me puzzled. I used strong glue on a concrete floor that was dry. Now the center tiles are loose, but the edges hold. I wonder if the slab has a bump I didn't catch.

I used to spend a whole afternoon fitting those tricky border pieces by eye and hand. You'd get into a zone, measuring twice and making small cuts with a saw.
