My electric bill hit 612 kWh last month and I can't figure out where it's all going
Got the bill yesterday and it was 612 kWh, up from around 480 the same month last year in my place near Akron. I've been trying to cut back too, shorter showers, line drying the laundry when it's not raining, all of it. The only thing that changed is my old fridge from 2009 and I keep putting off replacing it. Does swapping an old fridge actually move the needle that much or am I chasing the wrong thing here?
Ha, I would be the last person to give fridge advice since I held onto a dying one for years because I kept saying it was still cold enough. That said, an old fridge from 2009 can really eat up power, especially if the seals are shot or it is running nonstop to keep up in the summer heat. My sister swapped hers out and saw a real drop on the bill, though I want to say it was more like 60 to 100 kWh a month, not the whole jump you are seeing. If that fridge is 17 years old it is probably worth checking, but you may also want to look at your AC and water heater since those tend to be the big hitters in July.
