Walked into a shop outside Cleveland that still runs a 1980s Bridgeport manual mill as their daily driver
I stopped at a job shop near Akron last week to drop off some parts, and the owner had this beat-up Bridgeport Series 1 that he uses for almost every setup. No DRO, no digital readout, just dials and a worn-out handle. He told me he's had it since 1987 and never felt the need to upgrade. The whole place smelled like cutting oil and stubbornness. Meanwhile I see guys online dropping $50k on a brand new CNC mill and still can't hold a tenth. Anyone else run into a shop that just refuses to modernize?

That brings up something people don't think about much. Running a manual machine for decades actually builds muscle memory that no CNC can copy. You're literally feeling the cut through the handles and hearing the pitch change as the tool engages. That old Bridgeport owner probably knows exactly how much deflection he's getting on every cut just from the way the machine vibrates through the floor. Modern shops trade that tactile knowledge for speed and automation, but there's something to be said for having a machine that's basically an extension of your own hands.

That "no DRO" part got me thinking. I know a guy who runs a shop out of his garage and he's got this old South Bend lathe from the 40s. He keeps a magnifying glass on a stand next to it to read the dials because they're so worn down. Last time I was there he was turning down some brass fittings and he's just eyeballing the cuts by listening to the chip sound. Says he can feel when it's right. I couldn't do it but he's been at it so long he probably could do it blindfolded.
