Can we talk about whether HTML or CSS is harder for a beginner?

Last Tuesday I was teaching myself basic HTML and it was going fine... got the structure down for a simple page in about an hour. Then I tried to center a div with CSS and spent three hours on it. My buddy started learning last month and he says CSS just clicks for him but he can't remember any HTML tags. It's weird how people's brains work so different. Which one gave you more trouble when you were starting out?

Yeah CSS took me way longer. I just started copying code from existing sites I liked and tweaked it until it did what I wanted.

@abby_morgan18 I actually see it the opposite way. Copying code from other sites helped me get started faster than tutorials ever did. Working backwards from something that already works teaches you what each line actually does in a real layout.

Wait you just copy pasted full sites and figured it out that way? That feels like cheating almost but I guess it works if you're paying close attention to every detail. Did you ever accidentally leave the old site's styling and end up with a total mess that took forever to untangle?
