Rant: my kid said 'I'll just copy code from YouTube' and it bugged me for a week
My 14 year old was working on a little Python dice game on our laptop in the kitchen and I heard her say she didn't need to learn loops because she could just copy the code off a video. That bugged me for a whole week, mostly because I did the same thing at her age with HTML layouts and never really got why tables were breaking on me. So I sat with her and we typed out a 20 line guessing game from scratch, no copy pasting, and she got stuck 3 times before it ran without errors. It took her like 40 minutes and she was so proud when the thing finally guessed the right number. Has anyone else had a kid or friend who wants the shortcut first, and what did you say to them?
Man, my buddy went through the exact same thing with his son and a Scratch game, kid wanted to just drag blocks from a tutorial and call it done. He made him rebuild one tiny part solo and the kid sat there stuck for 20 minutes, then lit up when it finally worked.
