DAE get stuck choosing between a $22 bag of single origin and a $12 bag of the same roast, and the cheap one wins?
I was standing in my local shop in Sacramento last Saturday for what felt like 15 minutes holding two bags from the same roaster, same Ethiopian beans, same roast date, and I just could not decide. One was $22 for 12 ounces, the other was $12 for 12 ounces, and the only real difference was the first one was labeled single origin small lot and the second one just said Ethiopia. I went with the $12 one because rent is due and honestly I felt kind of dumb paying almost double for what might just be a nicer sticker. Got home, brewed it in my usual V60, 15 grams in, 250 out, and it was fine, totally drinkable, but a little flat and the finish died fast. Now I keep wondering if the $22 bag had that extra juicy berry thing I always chase with these beans, or if I just saved $10 and dodged a marketing trick. Has anyone here actually done a side by side with the same roast at two price points and could taste the gap, or am I just paying for the label half the time?
I used to grab the cheapest bag every time at my old spot in Portland, figured it was all the same beans with a fancier name on the front. Then a roaster there talked me into buying both lots of a washed Kenya, and the $21 bag had this clear blackberry thing the $13 one just did not have at all, not even close. So now I still buy cheap most weeks, but I stop feeling dumb when I splurge, because sometimes it really is different coffee and not just a sticker.
