Oh man, congrats! That first perfect cup is such a great feeling. For me, it was finally getting my water temp right around 200 degrees and using a finer grind that made everything click. Now I can't go back to my old ways!

So did you get a thermometer or did you just learn to eyeball it? I'm always skeptical when people say they know the exact temp without actually measuring.

People treat temperature like it's some kind of religious guesswork these days. Everyone just sticks their hand over something and says "yeah that feels about right" and then acts surprised when their bread doesn't rise. I think we've decided that knowing anything for sure is less impressive than pretending we have some mystical touch. It's the same with steak doneness and even oven temperatures. Nobody wants to admit they're using a tool, they want to tell you they just had a feeling about it. A thermometer just means you're paying attention, not that you cheated.
