A retired diver in Galveston told me to always log the water clarity, not just the depth.

He said, 'A murky 30 feet is harder than a clear 60,' and it finally clicked for my planning. Anyone else track specific visibility notes like that?

That's a solid tip for wreck divers too, visibility changes how you handle lines and avoid snags.

Yeah, when the vis is that bad like @the_blake said, I just ditch the reel and use a spool instead. It's way less likely to catch on something you can't even see. You can keep it tight to your body and just feed out line by hand.

Visibility is so bad on some wrecks you could tie a line to your buddy and still lose him.

We had maybe two feet of viz on the U-352 off North Carolina last fall. My buddy was right in front of me and his fins just vanished into the murk. I kept one hand on the wreck outline the whole time because a reel felt like it would just tangle in nothing.
